What’s In Your Valentine’s Day Chocolate Around The World?

February 14th is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to start thinking about Valentine’s day chocolate! What kind of chocolate do you like on Valentine's Day? Do you like it with caramel, peanuts or just plain? Chocolate around the world can be very exciting. Would you choose any of these chocolates for Valentine's Day? If your significant other doesn't like eating insects, we recommend against buying any of the chocolates listed below.

·       Australia: In some less populated areas of Australia, residents put witch larvae in their chocolate. The larvae taste similar to almonds.

·       Brazil: If you're in Brazil and see any giant winged ants flying around, don't kill them. Some Brazilians wait a whole year for them to appear because they only come from underground in October and November. They are then dipped in chocolate and eaten. Let's say they add mint flavor to the chocolate.

·       China: Water bugs are often added to chocolate in China. It is not uncommon to find bugs in other foods. You can really never know what bugs are in your chocolate when you're in China.

·       Mexico: Mexicans don't run away from locusts, they put them in their chocolate! It gives it quite a crunch. Sometimes they will also throw worms in there.

·       Japan: The country is known for its interesting food options and chocolate is no exception. In Japan, you can find everything from grasshoppers to cicadas in chocolate. Another interesting additive that we can try if given the opportunity is green tea.

·       The Netherlands: Mealworms don't just live underground in the Netherlands. They are often added to chocolate. They're usually crushed so you won't even know you're eating wormed chocolate unless you read the ingredients on the label.

·       South America: If you've eaten chocolate in South America that's red, it's probably not that color because of some kind of dye. An indigenous insect, the cochineal, is often included in chocolate production here.

·       Thailand: Bugs are eaten as snacks in Thailand. There really aren't many limits as cooking bugs is not only economical but also tastes great if cooked properly. In Thailand, they don't necessarily have a choice fault they like to throw chocolate in. Just know that if it's an insect, it's probably going to get into not only chocolate but pretty much everything you eat in this country.
